  • Dude my bad! Thanks for pointing this out. I opened this particular song “Acceptance” in WaveLab and by golly, the guitar track here IS in mono. For some reason, I have chosen to have the guitars here in mono, but perhaps only on this song. So much for all that techie talk eh? =))

Anyway, I will be replacing that with another song from the album tonight. This time I’ll verify that everything’s in order. Thanks again for listening! :)

  • To click, or not to click, that is the question…
Hi there! Yes, that’s one good way to do it, production-wise. Although I think that some very sensitive musicians (or music producers) may notice the mix of free-time and click-tracked songs within the same album, especially if (1) the free-time songs are a bit on the wild (or live) side, timing-wise, and (2) the clicked songs were bar-beat edited (or Elastic-Audio’ed, or AudioSnapped, etc) to precision. Just exaggerating here… ;)

I completely agree with you that musicians should all strive to get comfy with clicks. I love playing with precision, this is the “school” where I come from. But as I said in this blog, it is very ironic that drummers are also the most irksome (and the ones with the most technical difficulties!) when it comes to playing to the click. From experience working with many drummers in the Studio here and the U.S., I would say that less than 5% of the lot were able to play (just play, not necessarily groove yet!) to the click. Lightening up though, the majority of drummers we’re talking about have perhaps around 5 years of live playing experience to my estimate…

Regarding “Against the Wall”, as I recall, the band’s budget was the biggest single limiting factor in that project. While I wasn’t involved during most of the tracking stage, I remember Myko saying that the band couldn’t even afford 2nd takes or even punch-ins, and they let go of a lot of small mistakes. When it was time to mix the album, I only had about 30 minutes to work per song, and so I really couldn’t afford to fix most of them… :(

  • If you can’t beat ‘em, Auto-Tune ‘em!
Yep Botski… And then there’s the Antares ATR-1 (or the newer AVP), a hardware box designed to correct out-of tune notes in *real-time*, so that even the worst singer-wannabee can bedazzle and mesmerize his/her audience live.

Of course the box is small enough so you can hide it somewhere hehe!

As to whether it’s all a deception game is left to each of us. I guess it’s the same as makeup or MSG, or even steroids? ;-)
